Sounds of Light

ABSTRACT

Sounds of Light” (2013), an interactive sound and visual installation by Naziha Mestaoui a visual and sound poem about how our perceptions interrelate, a vision beyond sight. “Sounds of Light” at the crossroad between tribal culture and contemporary art is an installation created from sacred songs, consisting of a system to visualize the shapes generated by the songs at the surface of the water.

Between ancestral traditions and technologies, using technologies to make the invisible visible. The artwork is composed of a bowl inside of which there is a mirror covered with water. A sound system creates vibrations. The waves move in the water according to the music. The traditional sacred music and its energy shape the water. As 80% of our body is made of water. the artwork reflects the effect of this sacred music on the body.

“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” – Nikola Tesla

“What we have called matter is energy, whose vibration has been so lowered as to be perceptible to the senses. There is no matter.” – Albert Einstein

“Sounds of Light” is using technologies to make the invisible visible. The artwork is composed of a bowl inside of which there is a mirror covered with water. A sound system creates vibrations. The harmonic frequencies generated by the soundwaves make geometric waves at the surface of the water. The waves move according to the music. At the crossroad between ancestral traditions and technologies, the artwork created from traditional and sacred music unfolds in space the different facets of vibrations our reality is made of: sound, light, matter, energy, feelings…

Sounds of Light is an interactive sound and visual installation which generates sounds and light reflections . A series of water-filled discs are aligned in space . Each disc diffuses a song whose frequencies form in a series of fractal waves and geometric patterns in the water . The visitor interferes with the device, its movements change the song on the disk and creates resonances, echoes. The traditional sacred music and its energy shape the water. As 80% of our body is made of water. the artwork reflects the effect of this sacred music on the body. Inspired by experiences with ancestral culture from the Amazon tribes, Naziha gives life to a sensorial experience where movement, sound and image create an environment that open to a consciousness of the essential elements that compose us and our universe. The life energy can take different shapes, matter in vibration, made visible by water and light.

This is a work about cymatics where the senses mingle. Visitors hear the sounds they can also feel and see, through geometric shapes generated by the water and light reflections that fill the space. Sound waves made visible on the surface of the water are a visible side of the wave passing through the body, also made of water, these tribal sacred songs are microcosms that contain all the worlds, visible and invisible …

This work is inspired by two travels in the Amazon in immersion with the Huni Kui tribe , around the idea of a meeting between our modern society, our science and our technology and ancestral societies based on another sense of reality and different access to knowledge. The evolution of our occidental society related to technology develops more and more into a society of the immaterial. These ancestral societies based on the vision of a more intangible than a material world are an inspiration for our own future.
